1839 to 1860

Rock Island County’s interest in caring for aged and handicapped persons dates back to December 3rd, 1839 . On June 11, 1853, 37 acres of farmland in South Rock Island Township were purchased as a site for a farm. As Rock Island County’s population grew, it became apparent that a larger place was necessary, so on November 20, 1860, the first home was sold and a 180-acre farm was purchased in rural Coal Valley.
